Why British Labs?
The History of British Labs:
Originating in England in the 1880’s, the modern Labrador retriever’s characteristics have diverged into two distinct types of dog. The American Lab has been bred to be always very driven and high-energy, working for field trials and hunt tests. A dog with a “good” or “strong” pedigree in America will have multiple AKC field trial or AKC/HRC hunt test awards in his lineage. What then, is the difference in a strong-pedigreed American dog and a well-bred UK dog? That all comes down to what is expected of the dogs to achieve these titles.

The British Lab continues to be very driven in the field yet quiet, calm, and steady, also serving as a loyal and loving family dog. This is mostly due to the different requirements in field trials and hunt tests in the two countries. In the U.S., field trials and hunt tests require the dogs to run hard, fast, and mechanically obey commands. Game finding, or use of the nose, take a backseat to crisp handling and marking because the “game” used are dummies or dead game. Different types of terrain, including water, are part of the trials and each dog gets the same retrieves at each event. British field trials also require the dogs to run hard, but also to be calm and quiet. Game finding (using their nose) is of primary importance in a British trial because the dogs are engaged in an actual live hunt with various types of game. No dog gets the exact same retrieve, giving each a chance to perform uniquely. They will have many Kennel Club of England field trial champions or field trial winners in their lineage.

British Labradors are a highly intelligent breed of dog that analyzes situations more so than other breeds. They also possess superior scenting ability and are strong swimmers, making them excellent waterfowl dogs as well. Physically, British Labradors are usually finer featured and smaller than their American counterparts, weighing 45-75 pounds.

British Labs:
When you begin to breed dogs who excel in these two different types of trials, you can see how the dogs’ characteristics begin to shift in two different directions. American dogs, in general (remember, there are always exceptions) will be fast, driven, and bigger. They often have tendencies to whine or make noise in the blind, since blind manners are not strictly evaluated in American trials or tests. British and Irish dogs, on the other hand, will be calmer, quieter, and more apt to use their noses in the field. At the end of the day, one is not better than the other.
